Fauja Singh has broken a number of world records in multiple age brackets and is still running at 106 years old.
Fauja Singh was born on the 01 April, 1911 in Beas Pind, Jalandhar, Punjab, India.
Fauja Singh was the youngest of four children in his family. He did not learn to walk until he was five years old. As a young child his legs were so weak and skinny he could not walk long distances and was teased by the other children – and called “Danda” which means stick or baton.
He never went to school but became a farmhand minding cattle and tilling the land. Fauja started running to strengthen his legs and as a young man was a passionate runner. He gave up running in 1947 when British India was split into two independent states.
He married Gian Kaur, whom his parents considered to be a suitable bride and together they had six children.
About Fauja Singh
After the death of his fifth son in 1994, Fauja Singh started running again.He was 84 years old. Fauja lost his wife in 1992 as well as his daughter who died during childbirth. This drove him to make a change and in the 1990’s he moved to England and went to live with one of his sons.
As 89, Fauja took up running again with enthusiasm and started training and entering marathons. He arrived at his first training session dressed in a three piece suit much to the alarm of his trainer. He ran his first marathon in 2000 at the age of 89, thinking it was 26 kilometres , not 26 mikes which is equal to 42 kilometres!
At the age of 93 he completed a 26.2 mile marathon in 6 hours and 54 mins – almost an hour faster than the current record for his age group. He has been awarded the Ellis Island Medal of Honour by the National Ethnic Coalition for racial tolerance. He received the BrandLaureate award in Malaysia after the 2nd Annual Cahrdikala Run which was themed as 101 in honour of him. In 2004 he appeared in an Adidas advertisement with David Beckham.
In 2011 he appeared in a advert for PETA. Today at 106 years of age, Fauja is 172 cm tells and weighs only 52 kilograms. He never smokes or drinks and never has and lives on a a diet of strictly vegetarian food and he drinks allot of water with tea and ginger.

Fauja’s superhuman skill is learned. He has developed his exceptional running ability through training and dedication.
Guinness World Records
Guinness World records refuses to ratify any of the records broken by Fauja Singh and he is therefore not mentioned in any of their books or records.
